InWorldz, Our Home Away from Home: A Letter from Immortalis

If you are in InWorldz now, have you left Second Life? Why did you move to InWorldz?

The short answers are "No, we have not left Second Life.", and "We moved only our personal home/estate and our building studio/experimental builds parcel."

Alchemy and I live in both places. InWorldz is our house in the country and Second Life is the big city where we commute to work, socialise, and enjoy the nightlife. Then at the end of the day when we are tired and ready to be alone at home, we go back to InWorldz.

As all of my building for the store starts in InWorldz first. Naturally our experiments show up there first. When products are retail ready, we release to BOTH grids at the same time. Second Life is where we started and we will always be there.

We will also be releasing, over time, items that are specifically needed in InWorldz only. Due to a smaller base of stores/designers, there are avie-related items that I want and cannot find, so have to build myself. It's strictly necessity building.

The biggest reason we are in InWorldz is financial. When Alchemy and I gave up our 5 sims in Second Life, it was purely a real world financial decision. Our sims were approaching the cost of a RL home mortgage and we did not have that money to spare.

If we could, we would have left our sims up for eternity in Second Life. When we gave them up, we lost our home, not just our retail shop. To remain in SL, we relocated our retail presence. We are still there...but we have been homeless for a long time.

A lot of people would simply say, just buy a small parcel and set it up. I tried that. It didn't work very well. I felt constrained by the theme of the other parcels. I didn't have enough room or enough prim, so we moved our personal home to InWorldz.

I found room for my imagination, with extraordinary prim counts and not much financial investment.

I don't expect people to follow us to InWorldz. This note is just for the few people that wonder if we will ever build sim environments again. The answer to that is yes, and we already are. If you want to see what we have going over there, I have experimental sea caves, ruins and soundscapes that are meant to be experienced with a particular windlight setting and water, and explored with a particular playlist of music, that is on the sim now.

If all you are interested in is our shop, our brand is on both grids. Releases are synced to both grids.

...but for those times you miss just sitting in one of our landscapes, exploring and listening to music...we can offer that again. Don't get hung-up on it being a different grid. Think of it as a weekend trip to the country. You're on holiday. You're a tourist.

In my short time in InWorldz I have made a few observations. I have not found it to be as easy finding the really artistic and immersive sims OR find designers I really love by exploring. There are here but spread out in pockets.

Quick Points:

  1. Because of the lower population, I find my time here more solitary than SL...but I'm here with Alchemy so this grid is appropriate for a private home.

  2. Because uploads are free, land is cheap, and transferring creations between grids is pretty easy, this is a haven for builders like me.

  3. Sculpt bounding boxes respect their visual shapes so additional invisible prims/setting to phantom is not necessary.

  4. Mesh is here in the beta client and I have brought mesh in easily.

  5. One of my biggest worries was that I would not have an AV that looked good. Alchemy and I are vain I suppose. LOL But that worry is unfounded. It simply took a little longer to find what we wanted. There are just enough big designers here that we got our AVs set up in a day.

  6. You can bring in Lindens and exchange them into the local currency, which are IZ's (pronounced Izzies). So we found nearly everything here priced at half of what we were used to. We use InBiz to exchange IZ's in and out of Second life. It's a 2 way transfer.

  7. Our windlight settings are already in the stock client. We gave permission for that a long time ago ironically.

  8. InWorldz CAN be immensely ugly, just as SL can. But as designers we control our own environments and one of the best things you can do is change your windlight settings immediately. We use and have designed our environments to be experienced with windlight set to "Shadow1" and the water set to "glassy.

NEW AT AI: Coastal Rock Formation

One versatile piece to create endless caverns and vistas to explore!
The Coastal Rock Formation is one linked object with unique textures on all sides. This allows you to turn it this way and that, mash duplicated together in all sorts of configurations to make a maze of sea caverns of your own...or simply to stand alone as monolithic islands in the surf.

This pack also ships with 4 additional configurations added to an invisible extender prim making it easy for you to add the set to your space as off-sim enhancements.

Each of the 4 off-sim objects are the same formation, but rotated 90 degrees, so you don't have to rotate it yourself.

Mod & Copy, you can half submerge them, stand them proud, add campfires under the eaves and swirl waves at the base of each rock....

A terrific companion for our Tidal Pool Wave and Ocean Soundscapes Pack!

• main configuration - 8
• offshore versions - 9 each
• optional ambient light = 1

A Note from Immortalis Cyannis ...

There is magic in water. I grew up near the sea and some of my greatest boyhood memories revolve around roleplay of old sea myths and stories. From ancient myths of fantastical sea creatures and gods to later legends of the sunken continent of Atlantis, the imagination of my youth had great influence on the man I am today.

I remember walks along the sand in the mist, and off in the distance were great monoliths and sentries risen out of the the distant gray.. They were always just out of reach, protected by the swirling jets and eddys. Dangerous and just out of reach but surely populated by those fantastical sea creatures and gods.

I spent many hours staring out at the ocean.

Now I live in a desert, and although physically the ocean is hundreds of miles away, when I revisit these environments virtually, my imagination knows not the difference.

The Coastal Rock Formation is one linked object with unique textures on all sides. This allows you to turn it this way and that, mash duplicated together in all sorts of configurations to make a maze of sea caverns of your own...or simply to stand alone as monolithic islands in the surf.

Along with the on-sim object, I have 4 off-sim coastal rock formations. Each of the 4 off-sim objects are the same formation, but rotated 90 degrees, so you don't have to rotate it yourself.

Mod & Copy, you can half submerge them, stand them proud, add campfires under the eaves and swirl waves at the base of each rock....

NEW AT AI: The Ruins Alcove

This pack ships with 2 different versions of The Ruins Alcove one with an open back, and one with the back closed. The open back version can be handy when you use it as a merchandising tool in a shop or museum if the alcove is set against a wall. If someone was to step into it, or navigate in with their camera, the open back version will look closed from the front view, but will not trap the camera once inside. This can reduce the frustration of guests viewing items within it when it's flush against a wall.

Additionally, we have included a light prim that you may wish to tuck near the bottom of your alcove to add the warm, ambient glow that you see on our own display and in our adwork.

A terrific companion for our Coastal Rock Formation, Tidal Pool Wave and Ocean Soundscapes Pack!

LAND IMPACT:

• open back - 7 + invisiprim - 2 (if used for a walk-in display)
• closed back - 8 + invisiprim - 2 (if used for a walk-in display)
• optional ambient light - 1

A Note from Immortalis ...

Originally this was not a retail product. Let me begin at the beginning.

When Alchemy and I gave up our 5 sims in Second Life, it was purely a real world financial decision. Our sims were approaching the cost of a RL home mortgage and we did not have that money to spare.

If we could, we would have left our sims up for eternity. When we gave them up, we lost our home, not just our retail shop. We relocated our retail presence in SL but we have been homeless for a long time.

A lot of people would simply say, just buy a small parcel and set it up. I tried that. It didn't work very well. I felt constrained by the theme of the other parcels. I didn't have enough room or enough prim. So we moved our personal home to InWorldz.

I found room for my imagination, with extraordinary prim counts and not much financial investment, to begin building again in a manner I was accustomed to. I call InWorldz my "country estate". I live in both, just as people commute into and out of the big city. For socialising, nightlife, work and many other things we are in SL. When I am building or it is the end of a long day, we go to our home in Inworldz.

Long story short, I am building again.

The Ruins Alcove came about as I was designing our private home. I wanted something solid and with layers of age. As the other pieces snapped into place(the sea caves, the ocean waves, and the sounds) the alcove evolved into a standalone item meant to blend into all of the coastal themed items.

So, this piece is the first of many more in the "ruins theme." The next pack to be designed is the much larger, and matching "bigger brother" building kit to create a more immersive and spacious environment.

The future building kit will be completed as a natural byproduct of building our personal home. Please look for it in the coming months. It's good to be back.

NEW AT AI: Tidal Pool Wave

This pack ships with 2 different versions of the wave: one with Full Bright turned on, for those who wish it, and one with it turned of for a greater level of realism.

The waves are identical except for that setting, and they are fully modifiable so that you can change any aspect of them you wish, such as size, glow, or colouring.

A terrific companion for our Coastal Rock Formation and Ocean Soundscapes Pack!

A Note from Immortalis ...

When I build, I'm happiest when I can control every aspect of the build. Something I have not, up until now, taken control of is water. During the creation of the Sea Caves sim build, in InWorldz, I found myself on a grid where I didn't have the same tools I had in Second Life. I had to create water effects out of necessity.

If I was going to have to build water, I decided to include features I have been wanting for years in second life water. I wanted Full Bright off, slow (almost still) movement, and the ability to control all aspects of the prim myself, instead of being constrained by someone else's idea of what good water looked like.

This water is quiet. It is not flashy bright and screaming for your attention. For my purposes it was perfect. In the daytime, and at night, it is more realistic. My windlight settings change the mood of the world and often water looks frenetic when the ocean is calmer. This water plays much nicer with calmer worlds.

It can be resized to gently swirl around small rocks, stretched larger to encircle the base of coastal formations, or even larger to gently suggest offshore or deep ocean swirling currents (which are perfect in a bay). I use a large one for this purpose then layer smaller ones where needed for a more realistic look.

Because, I do not want to dictate which water looks better in your applications, that with Full Bright on or off, I leave that decision to you. This effect is mod & copy.

NEW AT AI: Ocean Soundscapes Pack

People frequently asked us to share the soundscapes that we had crafted for our sims. Well, now you can make some of them your own ...

This pack ships with 3 separate soundscapes rocks, each with a unique set of sounds to make your water-enhanced spaces more immersive.

You can set the rocks out as they are, spacing them apart at various intervals to create a greater sense of realism, or take the scripts out and tuck them into objects in your own space to enhance the immersion without increasing prim count of your favourite space.

Terrific addition to our Tidal Pool Wave and Coastal Rock Formation packs.

We'll be releasing more soundscape packs with other themed kits soon.

A Note from Immortalis ...

Alchemy is a modest and quiet designer. She works behind the scenes often, and sometimes says to me at the end of the day, "I've worked all day and no one can see what I've done. There is nothing to show."

I always tell her, without you, my builds are lifeless. She is a talented song writer, scripter, and builder. This is the perfect example of a product that she's contributed, that cannot be seen. If I could share the most important trick to bringing an environment to life, it is this: sounds are the blood of your creations.

They are what make a place fully immersive. As an artist, I am driven by sound. When a place is being designed, it's the mood of particular songs that I channel into the objects I'm building. But when I am done building, the builds become tomb silent again. One of the last things I do as a builder is infuse the sound back in.

The design of this soundscape is purposeful, and tailored to an ocean environment with shore, sea caves, and calmer pools further away from the shore. The trick is placing sounds where they are realistically appropriate.

➤ Place all crashing wave noises only where the waves touch the shore.

➤ Place all lapping water noises only where you see calmer water.

➤ Place the booming sea cave, with their rumbling low bass crashes, at the back of caves.

If you place your sounds within your environment, in a realistic way, subconsciously your mind will accept it as real. It's effect balances the visuals and rounds out the overall presence of your builds.

Come Visit Our Resident Ghost: Ophelia Slipped Between the Veil

Inspired by Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood founder John Everett Millais' oil on canvas portrait, we've brought this haunting beauty back to life ... or at least part way ;)

As tragic as the portrait's muse, Elizabeth Siddal, whose life ended prematurely and in despair, our pixel phantasm's allegorical dance of death will add a tinge of the macabre when you invite her into your space.

✔ free-wandering full-bodied apparition

✔ ethereal, realistic movement

✔ leaves a gentle plasma trail as she floats

Pop in and visit Ophelia in our shop. You'll also find her haunting our Gatehouse Cottage on display just down the road from our main shop. Click on her to buy her, or purchase her from the vendor on the wall just inside the lobby of our shop.

New at AI: A Pair of Very Dapper Sheep (...and a couple of free gifts whether you buy something or not ;)

We have as much fun dressing up our windows as we do ourselves, especially when it gives us an excuse to have a little more fun with those saucy blackface sheep!

Since introducing you to the very dapper pair donning top hats in our lobby showcase we've had lots of folks asking to take them home. Now you can.

We've also tucked in one of our huggable sheep (pose included) as an extra gift (see picture below). Just stand back a few feet when you go to unpack your wooly new friends from their wild crate, and a few feet more if you decide to <cough> "dump" the scripts from the sheep ... (We do like to make our unpacking tools as fun and sometimes as irreverent as what they hold ;)

Pop in and take a peek at our fall displays and bring home those baaaaaaa-ad new friends, and while you're at it, be sure to click on the parchment scroll in front of the sheep in the window display to take home another free gift: a wearable version of the hat the sheep are in, as well as a jeweled walking cane, and a surprise novelty gadget that you're just going to have to discover for yourself when you unpack them all.
